Introduction

Rorschach Blots is the 6th track in The Ridleys' album "Reflection on Moonlight & Poetry", released in 2019.

Interpretation

Rorschach Blots is a song that can be interpreted in many different ways, but the longing for comfort and confusion of the main character are highly prominent throughout the song. The song seems to show a situation where a boy is possibly falling in love with a close acquaintance. This idea is supported by the boy saying that he feels safe around her to the point that it becomes unsettling.

"Staring at the shadows all alone

Driven by the longing to go home"

The shadows being referred to in the lyrics may be a metaphor for peace and solace from the busy, crowded, and bustling world we live in. The peace and solace that would have reminded him of home, whether it be a person or a physical place.

The fact is I can't forget her"

After him saying that he feels safe around her, these are the lines that follow. Lines that suggest that the girl being referenced in the lyrics is quite possibly a close acquaintance of him and that he has probably already expressed his love for her. His feelings were most likely not reciprocated, as the opening lines of the song are all about how he will learn to use his mind instead of his heart, which may be overwhelmed with emotions when making a decision, and the repeated mentioning of scotch, an alcoholic beverage, which, after drinking bottles of it, is making him insane.

This stanza refers to another song in the same album entitled "Starlit Ocean" which is all about finding comfort and peace, away from the problems and sins that a person has. This further supports the idea of the boy longing for comfort and finding "home".

These lines suggest that the boy and the girl tend to just keep things as it is to prevent confusion and for everything to just make more sense. This idea further supports the idea of one-sided love between the boy and the girl. With the amount of times these lines were repeated,we can say that they just stayed in a situation that made the most sense.
